This piece is heavily inspired by the compositional aesthetic of Alejandro Viñao. Sketches of Viñao is my homage to his distinct harmonic and rhythmic sensibility. While my piece does not feature as many complex rhythmic devices as his works, I have included some of his common compositional techniques such as rhythmic diminution, canonic melodies, simultaneous pulses, and metric modulations between duple and triple meter. Harmonically, the piece is based on the half-whole octatonic scale, which is frequently utilized in his percussion ensemble works. As the main marimba riff drives the energy of the piece forward, the initially sparse melodic voices eventually develop into an intense climax. Sketches of Viñao is dedicated to John Rapson.
